What a privilege to have you here, Nicola. Can you share more about a specific project or initiative that you spearheaded? How did you ensure its success?
I once took charge of a restaurant pre-opening in the UK that was already falling behind schedule. There was a lack of direction, and the team was demotivated and burnt out.
I was brought in to get things back on track. So, I got to work, breaking the entire project down into manageable sections and tackling each one systematically.
Once I defined the project on a more macro level, I was able to refine the finer details.
In the plan, I incorporated milestones and deliverables so that everyone understood their tasks and deadlines (e.g., who was responsible for what and when milestones should be achieved).
The plan also included a timeline, risk mitigation strategies, and contingency plans for worst-case scenarios.
By clearly defining the project, I provided the team with a concrete goal and specific, achievable objectives, deadlines, and budgets. This approach reinvigorated everyone, and the team regained their lost enthusiasm.
How do you balance the need for profitability with delivering high-quality products and services that meet the needs and expectations of clients and customers?
It’s a matter of fine-tuning between the two.
I keep a vigilant eye on my costs. This means meeting with suppliers to renegotiate, source more locally, for example, and always being on the lookout for better deals.
As for the operational side, I focus on enhancing the guest’s experience; after which, I adjust the prices accordingly.
Can you describe a time when you had to make a difficult decision in a multi-million-pound operation, and what factors did you consider when making that decision?
I was in the Caribbean for a hotel grand opening.
The construction site was severely behind schedule, with builders still on-site. The owners were eager to open a wing of the hotel, setting a target date and pressing on towards it.
We worked tirelessly, day and night, trying to make it happen, but with each passing day, the impossibility of the situation became increasingly clear.
Unsurprisingly, the stakeholders were losing hundreds of dollars daily.
We took the initiative and explained that continuing in this vein would only set everyone up for failure. There was too much uncertainty to navigate and an overwhelming number of expectations to meet.
Failing to execute the grand opening correctly would have resulted in dealing with a tarnished reputation for days to come. Despite the difficulty of the situation, postponing the opening was the right decision.
How do you ensure that your team remains motivated and engaged throughout the course of a large-scale project, and what strategies do you employ to maintain their focus and enthusiasm?
In project management, I frequently encounter milestones, which are moments of celebration upon completion of certain project phases.
Milestones delineate significant achievements, but they also serve as a reminder for the team to celebrate. This can be as simple as a handshake or a note of appreciation to a team member.
By engaging in these actions, I foster positive relationships and build trust, both of which are instrumental to a project’s productivity.
How do you measure success in a multi-million-pound operation, and what metrics do you use to evaluate the effectiveness of your strategies and tactics?
Client satisfaction with the project outcome is paramount for me, serving as the primary metric of success.
Additionally, throughout the lifecycle of the operation, I ensure that I do the following:
- Review the project scope.
- Evaluate the specifications.
- Stay within the allocated budget.
- Assess internal satisfaction.
Can you tell us about a time when you had to pivot in response to changing market conditions or other external factors, and how did you ensure the success of the project despite those challenges?
The last two years have posed significant challenges. There has been a dramatic shift in the labor force, coupled with fluctuating costs and a dynamic market environment. A substantial number of individuals have chosen to leave their companies.
While I’d like to believe that success was solely my doing, the reality is that I owe a great debt of gratitude to my team. They’re the single most critical factor in achieving our goals; without them, it would have been impossible.
All the diverse strategies, the implementation, and the creation were the results of a collaborative effort. The credit, most deservedly, goes to the team.
How do you ensure that your team remains aligned with the overall goals and objectives of a multi-million-pound operation, and what steps do you take to maintain clear communication and transparency throughout the process?
To begin with, I ensure that the project scope is perfectly clear.
After the kickoff meeting, I set aside time to meet with stakeholders, focusing on building relationships and providing them with an updated document outlining the necessary tasks. This aspect is paramount – outlining who is responsible for each task and the deadline for completion.
It’s crucial for everyone involved to stay updated on the project’s status throughout its lifecycle.
My advice is to maintain a high level of visibility. Communicate regularly, provide updates, meet with team members, etc. Be proactive and seize every opportunity to check progress and assess if any assistance is required.
Lastly, it’s important to maintain focus amidst distractions. It’s quite easy to get lost in the daily hustle and bustle. Set aside time to review the entire scope of the project and evaluate your progress.
Can you describe a situation in which you had to resolve a conflict or address a difficult issue within a multi-million-pound operation, and how did you handle it?
For me, conflict management is a daily undertaking. If you hold a leadership position, it’s a skill that can’t be overlooked.
Here are some suggestions on how to handle conflict:
- Be aware of the situation. Remember, often, people haven’t been taught the skills to discuss issues calmly and productively – myself included! So, maintain self-awareness of your feelings.
- Have the end in mind. Strive for more than just a solution.
- Listen actively and always have more than one option at your disposal.
